conversation. The more that you discuss it beforehand the more it will ease the stress of getting ready to make this change. BE TENDER Having a good approach when talking to your loved ones about in-home care will create the difference in how they will cooperate or refuse. Discuss your concerns for their wellbeing and safety instead of what’s wrong with them. Assure them that in-home care will only better their lives, not take away and that you all want to make sure that their needs are met every day. START OFF SLOW The severity of the need will determine whether or not an in-home care provider is necessary at the time. Steadily creating a home care plan by possibly having a provider visit a couple of times a week will help your parents adjust to the idea. WORK TOGETHER Again, the severity of your aging parent’s needs, leaves you with another way to help your parents adjust to the idea of home care. This is to include them as much as feasible in the decision making process. You can work together to produce the best home care plan and can also interview potential caregivers together. ALWAYS STAY POSITIVE This is a big change in your loved one’s everyday life and they are bound to be hesitant and possibly even a little bitter. Remain as positive as possible throughout the process, emphasize things that they are able to do, rather than what they’re not. Making sure it’s clear that they have freedom to make their own decisions will also reassure them that they haven’t lost control.
